STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education is increasingly being challenged. Many, like myself, believe that the arts provide ESSENTIAL glue for STEM education to actually work- thus producing the new acronym STEAM. Seth Godin, in the presentation link below, makes an extraordinary case for why we need to shift our thinking to build STEAM.

RSA's (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) Matthew Taylor, in this 11 minute fast past video, argues why "21st century enlightenment should champion a more self aware, socially embedded model of autonomy that recognizes our frailties and limitations".

In the light of new challenges and opportunities for the human race, RSA's purpose is to develop and promote new ways of thinking about human fulfillment and social progress.  Through its ideas, research and 27,000-strong Fellowship it seeks to understand and enhance human capability so we can close the gap between today’s reality and people’s hopes for a better world.  Amen.

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL- October 1, 2012--Today The Institute for Arts Entrepreneurship (IAE)- Chicago, IL announced an online interdisciplinary creative leadership educational pilot program initiative with Princess Taghrid’s Institute for Arts and Handicrafts Development located in Amman, Jordan.

The IAE will develop 5 online peer-based collaborative creative leadership courses to address 21st century gaps in career and leadership education beginning in early 2013. Geared towards high school, college level and adult life-long learners, multi- generational students who excel at science, technology, engineering, art and math (STE[+a]M), will begin learning together online in the Fall of 2013.

“In the 21st century views on technology, work ethic and cultural diversity are strikingly different not only in different parts of the world, and from discipline to discipline, but also from generation to generation. Each generation is leaving its own mark and disconnects between intention, action, and understanding of the complex dynamics of social interaction, performance standards, and patterns of acceptable behavior in the workforce. We need to adopt a new global culture of understanding about acceptable social and emotional practices that will fuel innovation and job creation in the 21st century,” said IAE's Executive Director Lisa Canning.

“In Jordan we understand that sharing a common language, such as English or Arabic or French, is not enough for us to be successful. Another type of common language needs to be implemented that crosses disciplines as well as generational and social divides. We know that utilizing the strengths of students across STE[+a]M disciplines will leverage the strengths of both the left and right brain. We recognize the new skills this kind of training can develop will not only advance individual careers, but help our industry leaders hire graduates from this kind of training program because our students are able to communicate and problem solve across generational and social divides,” stated Aghadeer Jweihan , Executive Director of Princess Taghrid’s Institute for Arts and Handicrafts Development.

In cooperation with Al Balqa Applied University and The University of California- San Diego, graduates of this initial 5-course Creative Leadership program will be granted a program completion certificate.

Are you a visionary leader or someone with a good idea? Print E-mail

What do you see? Are you a visionary or someone with a good idea?

Good ideas, unfortunately, are no longer in short supply, thanks to brainstorming and idea generating techniques. Good ideas are no longer what differentiates the perceived potential success of one start up from another either. Leaders with vision, however, are not so common. They possess a different value system.

So what is a visionary leader?

A visionary leader is someone who can sort through a sea of  ideas and identify a select few to weave  together into a plan that they know will make a difference in the world.

Visionary leaders:

  • Embody clear core values. Visionary leaders are able to show others their strength of will and personal integrity by tenaciously focusing on multiple related ideas; which usually leads to real change. Real innovation takes a lot of time. It took decades for Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to realize their vision.
  • Communicate Inspirationally. Visionary leaders usually start by communicating an inspirational picture of the future that weave their ideas into the frame for others to see.  The best ones can make the impossible look easy, so everyone, including investors, line up to commit.
  • Build strong relationships. Great relationships are key to every leader. Visionaries see people as their greatest asset, and listen as well as talk. Visionaries don't tell people what to do, but treat partners, investors, and customers like family and listen to their advice and often follow their input and suggestions.
  • Take bold actions. To create something truly  "outside the box"  requires being able to anticipate business change, rather than react to current events. Visionaries are always a little ahead of their time.
  • Radiate charisma. Those blessed with vision can communicate ideas with almost a spiritual charisma that energizes people around them. This energy translates into their willingness to jump in and help solve a technical problem, sign on as a team member, or invest resources when conventional wisdom might suggest otherwise.

Are you a visionary leader? How do you express what you see? Do you repeatedly see the same thing over and over again that others do not?

The choice is yours what you do with what you see.

However, a visionary leader would be the one who sees the opportunity as a mission that they are compelled to work towards on a daily basis.  A visionary leader will find a way to sustain their effort until their vision is realized. A visionary leader will attract followers, supporters, believers and helpers to make their vision come to life.

Someone with a good idea would not be that emotionally invested. Someone with a good idea is the one who would be looking for an easier score. Someone with a good idea would be looking for the immediate pay off.

Which person are you?
